A tonne of any biomass waste will save at least 450 litres of oil.

Elephant Grass
Timber as fuel
Less time is spent logging when you burn timber up to 2m long. It should be 18 months old to reduce moisture, reduce tarring and give more heat. Large quantities of painted and treated timber can cause smoke and may require an afterburner.

An average house needs only a third of a hectare of willow or SRC.

Straw as fuel
Oil seed straw, bean, wheat and barley straw are preferred, in that order. The bales can be large round (350Kg) or large square 500Kg.

Oil seed & bean straw is best, wheat and barley straw is also suitable.

One tonne of straw (20% moisture) should yield 4500Kw and save you 450 litres of heating oil! Dry fuel reduces tarring & gives more heat. (1% moisture loses 1.5% heat)

Throughout a year, a single average radiator will require about 1.5 tonnes of straw.

Big Round Bales will last over 24 hours depending on heat demand.
Heston Bales require D25 to give extra width for loading.

From one tonne of material you will obtain roughly 4% (40Kg) of ash. This ash is high in potash (the alkali - potassium hydroxide) and can be used as fertiliser.

For those wishing to convert from the metric system to the Imperial system, 1 Kw of energy = 3412 BTU's (British Thermal Units) exactly.
